Palos Verdes 3/16
Again the swell chart reported three-footers rolling in but when I showed up at Opaleye Cove this morning I saw once again I had been misled. Into calm waters at the back of the cove I chummed two handfuls of smashed canned peas then used the frozen variety one or two pinned to an #8 Owner Mosquito Hook snelled to the #14 line under the usual Cast-A-Bubble. Lots of hits but not opaleye. This time three sizeable jacksmelt in a row all tossed back.
With not enough whitewater back here I headed out to the point, where an occasional two-footer was riling things up. I did catch an opaleye but very small. Next came two baby halfmoon and a seniorita all returned back to the water. Well, that was fun I guess.
That will about do it for another fun opaleye season. Spring came early this year with the algae die-off and now the big fat adult opaleye are out at the kelp paddies spawning. At least I have my spot here at the back of the cove awaiting next winter’s eagerly anticipated storm swells starting November 8.
