Opaleye Point 12/4
I picked up Breakwall Shane this morning at four for another opaleye trip to Palos Verdes. It only took a few minutes to harvest a bucket-load of good quality green algae out of the Colorado Lagoon slime pit in Long Beach.
A quick jaunt up the 405 and down the 110 had us rappelling down the Opaleye Point trail at 05:30. This week instead of trying the right side of the point at first like I usually do, we went directly to the Marineland Ledge, where in the recent past I’ve had more bites.
Under Santa Ana conditions, the wind was blowing strongly offshore as evidenced by the flag atop the bluff at the Palos Verdes Bay Club sticking straight out. However at the fish hole the bluff protected the water in front of us, which was swell-less, glassy and crystal clear.
That was kind of the problem. We usually don’t catch many opaleye when it is beautiful outside and today was no different. Right away we had hits but could tell they were little guys. Seemed like it was an hour before I hooked and landed an opaleye, a two-taco specimen slid into the gunnysack.
Oh yeah, before we cast out for opaleye we launched our Storm WildEye sardines out to the kelp paddies for zero bass.
We had lots of bites including several bobbers totally submerged but hooked nothing the rest of the time we were at the ledge.
Around 8:30 we bailed for Long Point. Normally I wouldn’t head over there after the tide has ebbed but today we had a seven-footer at 7:45, so there was ample water to the left of the point where the opaleye hoards normally hang. Nothing around today as all we noticed were a couple of little guy hits by eleven.

Deep Thoughts of Fishermen:
Two guys from Benson County are quietly sitting in a boat at Devils Lake , North Dakota fishing and sucking down beer when suddenly Mel says, "I think I'm going to divorce my wife - she hasn't spoken to me in over 2 months."
Earl sips his beer and says, "You better think it over - women like that are hard to find.....
