Diamond Valley Lake 4/9

The ideal condition for largemouth bass fishing around here is a thick drizzly marine layer extending to Hemet just after a week or two of hot weather right around the time the fish are spawning.  The heat warms up the water, which wakes them up, then the overcast comes in and keeps the fish shallow.  They don't like bright sunshine so much.

There were a couple of workdays the past few weeks fitting the bill but that didn't do anybody any good.  Finally yesterday the cloud cover was just right so I packed up my gear in anticipation today would be ditto.

At 4am this morning I peeked out the back door and saw there was a cloud layer.  I had a snack and a glass of milk, and out the door I went.  The lake opens at sunrise but I like to get there an hour early for a good spot in line.

South on I15 I knew the day was shot when I saw stars glowing brightly above Lake Elsinore.  No more clouds.

Preparing my gear while parked in line at the entrance gate, there were clouds around but not the desired stratus variety.  These were cumulus along with a wind blowing up from the south, rather stormy for the fishes' tastes.

I tried all my usual spots with the 4" curly tail purple Power Worm Carolina rigged, didn't have a bite.  Neither did  any of the other 30 people standing on the shore looking stupid.  The clouds cleared out, the sun was on the water.

I will give it one more shot soon, as we are going to have a heat wave starting tomorrow 4/10.  The first drizzly June gloom that rolls in, I'm there.
