Opaleye Point 5/27

Happy Memorial Day.  ‘Twas a mediocre one for the Du-man and crew.  Conditions at the usual spots were beautifully scenic but as per usual when ocean conditions are Lake Tahoe calm and clear, we didn’t catch enough today for yours truly to expend the time to type something up.  I’m entering in the info anyway.

Breakwall Dan and I made our first casts at Opaleye Point a little after five this morning.  The tide was minus, with neither swell, wind nor muck.  We tossed Fish Traps around the kelp for twenty minutes with no bites, which led this Bedouin seeking other supposed productive rocks.  I fished from several natural jetties within a hundred yards of the trail, catching only one ten-inch sand bass while using the lure.

Back at the platform rock where Big Dan was hanging all the while trying several different methods, I cast a chunk of mussel here and there with the eight-pound outfit.  No bites.  He tried frozen grocery store smelt, peas, plastics and jigs.  Nothing.

We sat there on the staging rock staring at each other like Foreman/Ali before we decided to cruise over to Long Point.  There, Dan tried jigs and plastics, nothing.  I used plastics to land a 10-inch calico.  A hunk of mussel tossed out resulted in a few nibbles but there seemed to be nothing around big enough to suck in the whole wad.  I pried some limpets from the rocks, cutting the meat from their shell.  I cast that chunk out there on a number eight treble hook but had no nibbles as opposed to all the small fish activity I detected when using the much-softer mussel flesh.  From the pillar rock we saw what we thought were opaleye mulling about, but not for long.  Some inconsiderate scuba diver decided to launch next to our rock and pass within ten feet in front of us.  He has the whole ocean at his disposal and what does he do?

Oh well, after a beer run we traveled to Laguna Beach.  Being the holiday and all, it was quite crowded.  Even if we didn’t catch anything, we at least got an eye-full of bikini tops.  Over at the usual rock to the left Dan managed to land a ten-inch calico on the frozen smelt fished on the bottom.  I had a bunch of nibbles on mussel but could see nothing substantial in the clear water following up the bait.  Also while walking along the beach to the rock we could see a corbina or two frolicking near the surfless shoreline.  With all the swimmers around it wouldn’t have been prudent to toss out a hook, so we went home.
