Opaleye Point 1/3

Not wanting to waste another precious high tide, I went with the same program we executed two weeks ago.  Fish Opaleye Point early and if nothing bites there try Long Point.

Even though I caught two fish on the high quality enteromorpha I brought with me, I might as well say I didn’t catch any this morning at the bottom of the trail.  They were both zebraperch, a spirited but not very good eating variety of sea chub.  The largest went a pound‑and‑a‑half.

At seven‑thirty I hiked back up the trail and drove over to Marineland to fish Long Point.  I was surprised to see that both gates were unlocked before eight, offering an earlier access to the spot to the left of the point.  There, just like last time, I caught two opaleye on enteromorpha right away and had four or five other bites that didn’t stick.  The largest went two pounds.

The tide was zooming out at a fast clip, making access to the pillar rock a snap by nine.  I tried to the left of the pillar, where last time I had all those hits.  Nothing. I tried to the right, finding a zone about thirty feet away that showed signs of action.  The bite was very slow, with a noticeable partaker every fifteen minutes and a hook‑up every half-hour.  By ten‑thirty I managed another three three‑taco opaleye to give me a total for the day of five fish, or fifteen tacos.  The last half‑hour leading into eleven was dead, not even a bite noticed.
