Dana Point 12/7

Tuesday morning at six I met Breakwall Dan at the Doheny side of Dana Harbor where two weeks ago we saw an angler with four three-taco opaleye in his cooler. Talkin' about cooler. There was a breeze blowing forty-two degree air this morning. Nonetheless, with parka hoods enabled, we stood there watching our bobbers ever so patiently, waiting for something to suck up our hook wrappings of enteromorpha.

An hour passed with no hits when Mr. Fishcooler shows up with one of his buddies. They were using what looked like the same grade of green bait we were, each holding one of those thirty-foot telescoping cane style poles with small spinning reels attached. Yeah, that looked real dorky alright, but don't tell the fish. After only fifteen minutes Fishcooler's buddy hooked up and landed an opaleye that looked to weigh over two pounds.

A little later my bobber went down and I was on. It felt big, however I never saw it. I fought it up to the rocks barely out of net-reach when the hook came unbuttoned. I had a feeling that was going to be my only hit of the day.

Not really. Something like two-and-a-half hours later my bobber went down again only this time it was netted by Breakwall Don, who was just visiting. Dan, bored and looking for something to do snatched my rod and net to help out as I hoisted myself up onto the top of the rocks where the three of us admired the three-taco specimen. It looked big but only weighed one pound twelve ounces. What a team.
